Think again if you thought a meat free or vegan toastie could never stack up. Here’s a tasty line up of plant based must-tries that will take your toastie repertoire to a whole new level.
First, switch traditional butter for a plant based vegan butter like Nuttelex. This vegan butter not only crisps the bread up perfectly it is also nut free, soy free, corn free, egg free, gluten free, cholesterol free, GM free and virtually trans fat free.
Next, choose your casing, be it sourdough, sliced white or vegan puff pastry (great option if you have a Breville style toastie maker) and spread your chosen vegan butter inside and out on both sides.
Now, pick your filling. Here’s our current vegan faves, perfect for #meatfreemondays …
For something lovely and sweet you really can’t beat this mouthwatering combo of white chocolate and raspberry from PETA.ORG.UK. See how to create it here
When in the mood for something savoury, we don’t think could anyone seriously resist the clever combination of pickles, sauerkraut and shiitake bacon made famous at Sydney farmer markets from the guru of mouth-watering toasties Mister Toast.
While for bean fiends, we think Darren Purchese’s home made baked beans toastie from his book Chefs Eat Toasties Too (published by Hardie Grant Books) is the ultimate. Though to keep it plant based we’d sub the butter for Nuttelex. See it at DELICIOUS.COM
If you like heat and spice, another super satisfying combo is left-over chickpea or potato based veg curries. Simply mash till a smoothish paste and spread. For those who want extra heat add chilli. We love this chilli chickpea toastie from from Lucy & Lentils
